A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including extensive tooth decay that has destroyed enough tooth structure to render the tooth non-restorable. Impacted wisdom teeth are routinely extracted, as are extractions of some permanent teeth to make space for orthodontic treatment. Teeth are also extracted when they are in a jaw fracture line, are fractured due to trauma and cannot be restored, or when severe gum disease affects the supporting tissues and bone structures of teeth.
Wisdom teeth are extracted either because they are impacted, or they may cause a problem in the future. Gum infections due to bacteria and food debris occur in the jaw areas behind wisdom teeth, where regular brushing and flossing is difficult and ineffective. Impacted wisdom teeth can damage other teeth and bone or lead to the development of a cyst. Other reasons for which wisdom teeth are removed include potential crowding of remaining teeth and misalignment, which rubs against the tongue or cheek, causing pain.
